Yangzhou university which was merged out of several existing colleges on May 19, 1992, is a key comprehensive university at provincial level. Its roots came from Yangzhou Teacher's College, Jiangsu Agricultural College, Yangzhou Engineering College, Yangzhou Medical College, Jiangsu Water Conservancy College and Jiangsu Business College, some dating back as early as 1902. The merger of these colleges and institutions in 1992 into YZU kindled a reform in education, which is still underway, in present China. YZU takes pride in that Chinese President Jiang Ze-min inscribed the name of YZU.

YZU is a comprehensive learning institution in real sense. The programs and research going on at YZU include almost all the disciplines and branches of sciences: humanity, science, business, engineering, architecture, computer, medicine, art, music, agriculture, animal husbandry, etc.

YZU has a long history in enrolling international students. Approved by Ministry of Education of China, all the colleges in YZU, especially colleges with oriental culture characteristics, have qualified teachers and teaching facilities for international students to do study and research. Small groups in Chinese language teaching ensure quick progress at beginning levels. The course of culinary art study teaches the principles, preparations and nutrition system of Huaiyang food, one of the four styles of authentic Chinese food. Taught by some nationally famous martial art professors, the martial art (kongfu) and health care program teaches not only martial art, but also the Chinese traditional health care theory and practice. The medical college offers acupuncture and medical massage program. Besides that, YZU also has overseas students in Chinese history, modern and classical literature, philosophy, culture and art, law, business, agriculture, animal husbandry and biotechnology.
As the hometown of President Jiang Zemin, the city of Yangzhou, where YZU is located, is proud of its long history of over 2,500 years, rich culture and many eminent people: Shi Kefa, Qin Shaoyou, Zheng Banqiao and Yangzhou " Baguai" (a group of painters with peculiar styles), Yangzhou Scholars , Zhu Ziqing . It also boasts a long record of culture exchange between China and other countries. Marco Polo from Italy, Puhutin from Arabia, Cui Zhiyuan from Korea, to name only a few, chose to live and study in Yangzhou while Monk Jianzhen from Yangzhou voyaged 6 times to Japan and spared no efforts to bring Buddhism, Chinese culture and architecture to Japan. The city is also an excellent location for tourists. The city itself is a museum of Chinese culture. Scenic and historical spots are dotted inside and outside the city. The famous Slender West Lake is closely integrated with the YZU campus and makes it an ideal place for study and research.
